In high-volume content classes, frequent absences have higher than average consequences for both students and teachers. Frequent absences without a clear path toward re-assimilation into a classroom where content builds upon itself can result in perpetual confusion, leading to disengagement, declining motivation, and further absences.

The following data was considered when developing this absence mitigation plan:

To address this challenge, I developed a variety of technological resources designed to help students re-assimilate as needed from extended absences or to maintain pace with the classroom remotely. The most pertinent being:
- Targeted teaching videos (that demonstrate specific skills that will re-emerge throughout the semester) - Classroom notes/presentations available online - Assignments and due dates available online |
After website intervention, percentage of missing assignments decreased in both high-absence group and whole class.
In addition, scores on the Unit 1 test increased with access to (and norming of) more comprehensive website resources in both groups. |
Based on the data available, a comprehensive class website and set of out-of-school resources is a positive investment in student grades and assignment completion. As of the date of publishing this website, it is not yet possible to determine whether the apparent increase in student investment translates to a decrease in student absence during the second half of the course. It is unclear whether the observed effect was due to the website/resource itself.
